Getting multiple quotes for a garage or shop floor? Good. But not all quotes are equal — and neither are the contractors behind them. Most epoxy floor failures come from bad prep or cheap materials, not bad luck. These five questions will help you tell the difference before you sign anything.
1. What surface preparation method do you use?
This is the most important question. The answer should be diamond grinding. Diamond grinding mechanically opens the concrete surface, giving the coating a structural bond. Acid etching is faster and cheaper but leaves residue and creates a weaker, more variable bond — especially on hard, dense, or contaminated concrete.
2. What products are you using, and is the topcoat UV-stable?
Ask for the brand and product name for both the base coat and the topcoat. A reputable contractor can answer this without hesitation. Standard epoxy is not UV-stable — it yellows and chalks under sunlight. A UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat holds its color. If your garage gets direct sunlight — and most in Utah do — a non-UV-stable topcoat is the wrong product.
3. Does the quote include crack repair?
Cracks in the slab need to be repaired before coating. If a crack just gets coated over without filler, it will eventually print through the coating as the concrete moves. Ask specifically: “Does your quote include filling and repairing cracks?”
4. Do you test for moisture vapor?
Concrete slabs on grade can transmit moisture vapor from the soil below. If you coat a slab with high moisture vapor transmission without a vapor barrier, the coating can bubble or delaminate — sometimes within months. A good contractor will check for moisture before coating.
5. Can you show me examples of work you’ve done in Northern Utah?
Ask to see before/after photos of garages or shops they’ve actually installed in the area. Also ask if they have any customer references you can contact. A contractor who’s proud of their work will have at least a few past customers willing to talk.
